Romantics and Pragmatists

There are two types of people in the world: the romantics and the pragmatists.

Romantics are idealists, dreamers.

Pragmatists are realists, practical.

This difference permeates all aspects of life: relationships, work, money, health, etc.

Romantics marry because they think they have found the love of their life. Pragmatics marry because when it is practical to do so.

Romantics send flowers when they feel to do so. Pragmatics send flowers because a divorce would be too expensive.

Romantics need to work on something meaningful. Pragmatics work on something that maximizes their income.

However, no one is a extreme romantic or pragmatic, it’s more of a spectrum.

A extreme romantic would never be able to do anything worldly (taxes, financial planning, long sentimental relationship, etc.). A extreme pragmatic … maybe it is possible to be a extreme pragmatic? I don’t know.

I am a romantic (generally) but I have some friends who are pragmatics near the right end of the spectrum. Sometimes I wish I could be more like them. They seem to have everything solved, such confidence, like the world is better suited for them.

Romantics tend to suffer and struggle more, or at least that’s what it seems. However, they are the ones that ignite the spark to change the world. Pragmatics join when when it is practical to do so, and, unlike the romantics, they usually make it work.

The world needs both.

Try to be true to your type, but also learn from and admire the other side.
